Professor Wei Shi named Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering

We are proud to announce that Professor Wei Shi has been elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, one of the highest professional honours accorded to engineers in Canada.
On May 11, 2026, the Canadian Academy of Engineering announced the election of fifty new Fellows and six new International Fellows. Among the newly elected Fellows is Professor Wei Shi of Université Laval, Canada Research Chair in Silicon Photonics and Optica Fellow.
Professor Shi is internationally recognized as a leader in integrated photonics. His pioneering work on micrometer-scale silicon photonic transmitters employing advanced modulation formats has achieved terabit-per-second transmission capacity and record bandwidth density. Through his academic and entrepreneurial leadership, Professor Shi has made significant contributions to the advancement of Canada’s photonics innovation ecosystem. His research spans optical communications, advanced sensing technologies, and hybrid electronic-photonic integration. A dedicated mentor to hundreds of engineering students and a strong advocate for inclusive innovation, Professor Shi continues to strengthen Canada’s global leadership in photonics and semiconductor technologies.
